The facts

What air conditioning actually costs to run.

Power draw. A typical 3.5 kW single-room unit at a SEER rating of 6 to 7 draws around 0.5 to 0.6 kW while cooling. At 26p per kWh that is about 15p an hour. SEER is the seasonal efficiency figure on the unit's label: higher means cheaper to run.

Manufacturer data · Ofgem

Heating too. In winter the same unit runs in reverse, usually giving 3 to 4 units of heat per unit of electricity. That is far cheaper than any plug-in electric heater.

Manufacturer SCOP data

Summers are warmer. The UK's ten warmest years on record have all been since 2003, and 40°C was recorded for the first time in 2022.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions answered

Can air conditioning heat the room as well?

Yes. The same unit runs in reverse in winter and works as an air-to-air heat pump, giving around 3 to 4 units of heat for every unit of electricity. It is a much cheaper way to heat a room than a plug-in electric heater.

What does it cost to run?

A typical single-room unit draws around half a kilowatt while cooling, which is roughly 15p an hour at current electricity prices. The calculator on this page lets you put in your own hours and price.

Do I need planning permission?

Usually not for a single outdoor unit on a house, but there are conditions on where it goes and how big it is, and flats, listed buildings and conservation areas are different. We check before we quote.

Who is allowed to install it?

Anyone handling refrigerant has to hold F-Gas certification. Our registration is FGASS3031823. An uncertified install can void the warranty and is illegal.

What maintenance does it need?

Clean the indoor filters every few weeks in summer (it takes a minute) and have the system checked annually. We will show you the filters at handover.
